Snake Plant The snake plant is grown outdoors in the warmer, tropical like climates. At first glance, the Snake plant looks like a Burn plant but with all the spikes flattened out and with a little more color. The Snake plant is also known as Sansevieria trifasciata, and also as Mother's Tongue. The Snake plant is composed of tall flat colored foliage that are horizontal and look like snake skin. Sometimes you will find a Snake plant that has black in the colors of its leaves. Around the edges of the leaves you will find a yellowish green color that outlines the leaves in contrast to the horizontal lines giving the Snake plant a very unique look of its own. It also will tolerate various types and conditions of light surviving in the shade and in the direct sun. One of the most important features of the Snake plant is that you need to allow the soil to dry out well between waterings. When planting or transplanting a Snake plant it is also important to use soil that will drain well to keep this tropical happy.
The Snake plant will tolerate heat and drought well with a nighttime temperature of at least sixty degrees. Snake plant will also tolerate humidity and low light, which makes it an excellent plant that can be grown in many homes. The Snake plant grows in clumps and can be split up easily to create new plants or arrangements for around your home. Mixing the Snake plant with types of cacti also make unique arrangements that are certain to be a hit as a conversation piece.
One of the real problems with a Snake plant is that cold temperatures will cause the Snake plant to turn brown and ugly around the edges of the leaves without causing the plant to actually die off. The brown edges can take months to "grow out" until they are green and healthy looking again. You will only need to fertilize the Snake plant lightly about four times a year, but remember do not fertilize this plant during the cold winter months when it is more dormant.
