Large Periwinkle Flowers The large periwinkle is also known as Vinca Major, a part of the Apocynaceae family. The periwinkle spreads to form mounds. The mounds of Large Periwinkle reach out with trailing stems that create a covering for the soil. The plants will spread out to include three-inch wide leaves. Flowers on the Large Periwinkle are very light shades of purple to dark shades or lavender, adding brilliant coloring to areas your garden that you want to fill in with easy to care for flowers. There are other variations of flowers that are similar to the Large Periwinkle with the use of other colors, but the Large Periwinkle grows in only shades of purple.
If you want to start new areas of this Periwinkle flower growing through your landscape, you can take cuttings anytime of the year to promote new growth. If you have areas of your gardens where your Large Periwinkle are starting to look a little long, thin and stringy, cutting back your Large Periwinkles almost to the ground is going to promote fresh growth that will be thicker and healthier than previously.
Large Periwinkle is going to grow best in grow zones five through nine, in the lightest shade. The full sun often will burn off the delicate flowers that form on this plant, but the slightest amount of shade provides the rest this plant needs to provide continued growth and spreading.
