Cane Cuttings: Increasing Plant Numbers To get started on cane cuttings, you will need a healthy plant. Plants that are made up of more than one stem in the same pot are good candidates. You are going to cut the stem at the base of the plant, where the stem comes up out of the soil. Use a very sharp knife to slice through the thick stem with ease and without having to cut twice. Posted Monday, April 10, 2006 E-mail this page Printer-friendly page Use a very sharp knife to cut the stem into portions that are about two inches long. What is going to be important when you are doing this is that the stem has a bud on it. This could be difficult on some types of plants that don't get lots of leaves, but this only means that your portions will be a little longer than two inches.
Have a container of good draining potting soil on hand. What you will do now is lay the cutting onto the soil, with the bud portion placed in the soil. Water lightly, cover with a plastic lid or a piece of plastic. Keep your cuttings warm while the plant establishes roots. As you see the plant forming and the stem is growing upwards, (which may take a few weeks) you can take the lid off and start to water as you would your other plants.
