Flower Arranging Mechanics The mechanics of flower arranging include materials to hold flowers, stems, foliages and such in place in the container of your choice. Sometimes the container that we choose is too big or too wide to hold certain flowers in place. The flowers hold a risk of falling over. This is where holding materials come in. Floral foam is available in squares, rectangles, circles, half circles and small or large pieces. You are surely able to find a piece in your local craft store that will fit your container nicely.
You can also cut the foam you have to fit your container with little difficultly; just a sharp knife will work fine. Floral foam is a type of material that you can use many times over so be sure you don't throw it away when your flowers die off. You can use it for future flower arrangements and keep your costs down.
Pin holders are another type of material you can use to hold flowers together. Pin holders are small and heavy, with some type of oval or square base on the end so that the pins can work together to keep your flower arrangement secure. Pin holders are similar to straight pins that you use for sewing but they are a more heavy duty, and often longer.
Pin holders are used with clay or with the flower foam to hold larger stem plants into place with the remainder of your flower arrangements. This is done by putting the pin directly through the stems of the plants.
What else can you use to hold the stems of your goodies in place when you are working to create a flower arrangement? You can use pebbles, gravel, sand, shells, or any type of small materials that you can put into the container.
Wire is sometimes used across the center of the container that you will put the flower stems down into, to create a lovely flower arrangement. Chicken wire can be bent or used to keep the flowers into place and it is easily reused time and again so your costs are kept low in arranging various flowers in containers.
