Seeds, Seeds, Seeds If your hobby is anything like mine, you have a hard time deciding on seeds to grow in the greenhouse. There are so many things that you can grow. There are so many flowers to enjoy. There are so many vegetables that we want to start in the greenhouse! How do we make this decision? Posted Wednesday, April 5, 2006 E-mail this page Printer-friendly page How do we limit ourselves when all we want to do is grow more? It is a difficult task, but here I will tell you a little bit about how I choose how many seeds I am going to buy and how to make that tough choice.
I must admit I am crazy when the seed catalogs come in. I read them over for days thinking about all the plants that I can start, how big my garden can be and all the wonderful vegetables that my family could enjoy. I go through the catalogs and make listings of everything that I want all at one time. After a little bit I do get a little annoyed at the thought of spending so much on seeds and will put the books away for a day or two. Pulling my seed catalogs back out when I've become resonable again, I take my list and go through it again, weeding out the seeds that I have tried unsuccessfully to grow in my garden in the past. Then I go back through and weed out the seeds that are for annual flowers. I know I can't keep annuals going more than a year, I really need to concentrate on buying beautiful and easy to care for perennials.
So now that my listing of seeds is a little shorter, I go back and make sure that I am not ordering the same kind or type of seed for the same plant from two or three different catalogs. I do end up spending a lot of money but I am happier with my selection. When January finally rolls around and my seeds start arriving in the mail I get very excited and start planning on going to the greenhouse and getting everything started. I must admit that during every planting season I do go overboard, but in the end I have a great selection of plants and enough left over seeds that I can start my second crop in my greenhouse over the summer months for late fall pleasures!
